Hiroshima is a port city in Chūgoku founded in 1589 by Mōri Terumoto. Terumoto was removed from control of the city after Tokugawa Ieyasu came to power in 1600 and power given to the Masanori. By the 1870s, Hiroshima was a major urban center, with railroads and cotton mills by the Meiji Restoration and became the temporary center of government during the First Sino-Japanese War. The military held power at Hiroshima through the Russo-Japanese War and WWI. It became another military center during WWII, but because its position on a delta (which made incendiaries somewhat useless) the city was not bombed until August 6, 1945, when it became known the world over as the first target of a nuclear bomb attack, killing some 70000 people. Only a month later, Typhoon Ida killed another 3000. The city was reconstructed by 1949, when it was designated a "City of Peace". It has been an international advocate of nuclear disarmament since.
