At the center of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is the Cenotaph, a monument that holds the register of all of the people killed in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. An inscription gives the epitaph "安らかに眠って下さい 過ちは 繰返しませぬから", which means "please rest in peace, for [we/they] shall not repeat the error.". The inscription is purposefully ambiguous over what the error is.
A plaque states:

The inscription on the front panel offers a prayer for the peaceful repose of the victims and a pledge on behalf of all humanity never to repeat the evil of war. It expresses the spirit of Hiroshima — enduring grief, transcending hatred, pursuing harmony and prosperity for all, and yearning for genuine, lasting world peace.

Behind the cenotaph is a flame lit in 1964 that is said will remain lit until all nuclear weapons have been abolished. Some fear it will remain an eternal flame.

Behind the flame, and visible through the cenotaph, is the A-bomb Dome.
