This Beaux-Arts was built in 1917 to replace the original courthouse, which was so badly damaged by the 190 Earthquake that the ventilation system broke and was declared " "unsanitary and unfit for the transactions of the court", the Yolo County Courthouse. The architect was William Weeks, who was quoted as saying; "This courthouse is the most beautiful in California, and I have built and rebuilt many of them and have seen them all..." It has functioned as a courthouse since, though the county is actively completing a larger replacement.

As a side note, Yolo is believed to be a translation for Yo-loy or "place of the reed bushes" in Coastal Miwok. It has absolutely nothing to do with YOLO, the acronym for "You Only Live Once", popularized by Drake in the song "The Motto". UC Davis students nearby were amused by the sudden spike in popularity of the county they lived in, while much of the rest of the mostly-rural county was somewhat confused.
