Preceding and succeeding each tunnel of the Transcontinental Railroad in the Sierra Nevada were snowsheds built to protect the tracks from the damaging Sierra elements (something Theodore Judah had no considered at all). Some 60km were eventually built, initially out of wood (still visible nearby) before being replaced with concrete. This was apparently not enough, as every winter workers would need to shovel off snow from the tracks or shoot down dangerous icicles that could grow up to 3m in length. The tracks have been abandoned since 1993.
