Tunneling through the Sierra granite was slow going. Workers would drill holes on a tunnel face, fill them with explosives, then blast the rocks free. The Central Pacific initially used black powder from California Powder Works in Santa Cruz, using some 500 kegs of 11 kg bags a day, before switching to the new nitroglycerin, which was manufactured on site.
