The Palo Colorado rainforest is the second most prevalent forest type in El Yunque, generally upland swamp made of some 50 tree species with shallow roots located about 609m above sea level. Scattered among the Palo Colorado and Tabonuco Forests are the Sierra Palm Forests, dense patches of Sierra Palm (big tree seen in the middle here) that established where other forest types could not, generally areas of loose soil, steep slopes, and streambeds.
