Built in 1909 to facilitate commuter traffic, the Berkeley Pier extended 5.6km into the bay, linking with
www.flickr.com/photos/whsieh78/4338577884/Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco. The commuter traffic ended in 1939 after the opening of the Bay Bridge, and now is mainly used for fishing. At present only 4.1km is open, the rest being
left to decay.
