San Gabriel suffered through several earthquakes, including the 1812 Wrightwood earthquake that destroyed the original bell tower (campanario) and the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake. Like most of the California missions it fell into ruin following secularization in 1834. However it quickly returned to the Catholic Church, becoming a parish church in 1862. Since 1908 the mission has been slowly restored.
This staircase was the original entrance to Mission San Gabriel, opening directly onto what was then the El Camino Real.
