The center of the Inland Empire, Riverside is known for its history as the center of the citrus industry, as well as the school UC Riverside. The city was founded by abolitionist John North (who previously founded Northfield, Minnesota) in 1870, and it grew as a cultured, heavily Republican, temperance-minded city. The success of the Washington Navel Orange growing in the sunny, dry climate greatly contributed to Riverside's success, and by the 1880s, with new rail lines and irrigation, the city had nearly 250000 orange trees. In 1895 it was the richest city in the United States by income per capita.

This photo was taken at the saddle near the top of Mount Rubidoux, which overlooks the downtown area. The Sierra Cross is on the far right.
