In 1930, the WPA installed exercise equipment in a small pen South of Santa Monica Pier. It soon became a popular spot for the newly growing field of bodybuilders, including Vic Tanny, founder of the modern health club, fitness guru Jack LaLanne, and Gold's Gym founder Joe Gold. Due to maintenance issues, the old muscle beach closed in 1959. It was replaced by this new exercise pen, built in 1952 at Venice Beach. The peak of the fame for Muscle Beach was the 1970s and 1980s, when individuals such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny Trejo, and Stanley Williams used the facilities.
