Originally part of the massive 97,000 ha Hearst Ranch, "La Cuesta Encantada" ("The Enchanted Hill") was originally the site of the Hearst Family summer campsite. In 1919 newspaper magistrate William Hearst decided to build a home on the location. Earlier attempts were denied by his mother, who explained that William tended to go overboard with things. Employing Berkeley architect Julia Morgan, by the 1920s there was this massive main building, "Casa Grande" as well as three smaller mansions for guests, totaling 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 19 sitting rooms, gardens, pools, tennis courts, a movie theater, airfield, and the largest private zoo in the World.
