This dramatic 177m volcanic plug (see cars for scale) dominates this part of California. The last of the Nine Sisters of volcanic peaks stretching from San Luis Obispo 21km away. It was named by the PortolĂ  Expedition in 1769: "we saw a great rock in the form of a round morro". Previously offshore, it is now connected to the mainland by a small causeway. It was quarried from 1889 to 1969 but is now protected as a state preserve for peregrine falcons. This also means no climbing, with exceptions for the Chumash and Salinian Tribes, who hold the rock as sacred.
