In 1875, the IXL Lime Company purchased the Fall Creek area due to a large deposit of limestone at the Blue Cliffs nearby. This was transported by a gravity tramway
Lime is created by heating limestone at 900 deg C (CaCO3 + heat → CaO + CO2), which was accomplished by burning redwoods with the stone in the sealed chambers (kilns) for 3-4 days. 11 men worked at this spot, some 5-6 at the kilns and quarry, and the rest logging to fuel the flames. IXL ran this site from 1875 to 1896.
