My posting this painting painting might surprise you, but I have a sixty year old relationship with “ Lion at Home “ . I shall give a little information about the painting before an indulgent bit of personal history . It's worth looking at this painting as large as you can .
The huge painting is by Rosa Bonheur a French artist it was painted in 1880 and bought by the Ferens Gallery, Hull in 1913 . The painting is a great example of the kind of realism that was popular during the Victorian era. First exhibited in London in 1882, The Lion at Home was an immediate success with the public and critics alike. Rosa Bonheur was one of few women in the nineteenth century able to make a career as an artist. She had many exhibitions in France and England, and her work sold for high prices, similar to her male contemporaries.
Bonheur kept many live animals to sketch from. These included a pair of Nubian lions and their cubs who shared her studio in Fontainebleau, France. This particular painting is worked up from Bonheur's observations of those lions. This work was recently a star attraction of a major retrospective of Bonheur’s career. The exhibition, first in Bordeaux and then Paris, marked 200 years since her birth. Renewed interest in Bonheur in recent years has presented new stories about her life and experiences as a professional artist.
Of course as a ten year old I knew nothing about the artist or art but I liked this painting . When I was young my mother was a lone parent so she took all the strain of bringing me up. Saturdays were the day went we visited Hull town Centre we would visit the market in front of Holy Trinity Church. If the weather was good we might go down to the Pier and watch boats on the Humber. in the early sixties large ships still docked almost in the city centre within 100 yards of The Ferens you could see timber and fruit being unloaded from the top of Whitefriargate .
The trip would always conclude with a visit to the Ferens my mother was totally uninterested in paintings but she liked the cafe as some of her friends worked there . I guess for a period I was told to sit still while we ate cakes and drank tea. At some point I guess when I was nine or ten I was allowed to wander wound the gallery . Some paintings struck my uneducated eye I guess . There were a few of half naked mythological women that were quite interesting . My two favourites were one very gory painting of Saint Sebastian who had a number of arrows sticking out of his body. The Lions however were the star attractions partly because of its size its about 15 foot wide and seven foot high. It seems big now but too little kid it must have been like seeing cinemascope .
Naturally I had no understanding or taste at that time The finest painting in the Ferens then and remains so is a wonderful portrait by Frans Hals. I love it now but it did not interest a ten year old . Looking at the pictures in the gallery became a regular part of my childhood and I suppose by some sort of osmosis I acquired an interest in Art. Though a few years would have to pass before I acquired much knowledge . The Lions by Rosa Bonheur may not be a great painting but it certainly had an impact on me
