Jan van Eyck Square just before sunrise in Bruge, looking up the Spiegler (mirror) canal. Jan van Eyck (1390 – 1441) is Bruges' best known artist, a leader of the northern Renaissance style. van Eyck's statue can be seen in front of the Poorterslodge (building with the tower). The square was a major commercial center dating to around 1200, when the canal connected to the sea, and trading ships would dock here. By 1500 sediments deposited in the "Golden Inlet" leading from the sea to Bruges blocked ships and marked the end of Bruges as a major trading center. The toll house still exists, as does a meeting house used by dockers (Pijndershuisje). The beautiful Poorterslodge (Burgher's lodge) was used by wealthy merchants as a meeting house, and for awhile was a museum which housed some of van Eyck's paintings.
