The backbone of the Continental Divide stretches across the Indian Peaks of the Front Range of Colorado, with the core group viewed here from Shoshoni Peak. Across the valley are Apache (13441 ft / 4097 m) and Navajo (large summit knob, 13409 ft / 4087 m) Peaks, with a bit of the Isabelle Glacier clinging to the slopes of Apache. In the distance Arikaree (13,150') and North and South Arapaho Peaks (13500 ft / 4115 m) stick up over the jagged Niwot Ridge. To the right in the far distance the Gore Range can be seen on the western slope.

The naming of the Indian Peaks stems from the efforts of Ellsworth Bethel, a naturalist, high school teacher, and outdoor enthusiast who proposed the names in 1914 as a tribute to the Indian tribes that had associations with the state of Colorado.
