The area De Gelderse Achterhoek has a varied natural scenery with hilly landscapes and woodlands. De Achterhoek is a true paradise for biking and walking enthusiasts. The woody surroundings are not far from the nature area De Veluwe. The snow of the last few days did change the forest near Lochem into a winter wonderland. I walk in this quiet and magic wood with the fresh fallen snow. I breath the pure air of winter…The silence of the place was almost overwhelming. It was very -8 degrees celcius cold, a damp cold. I felt completely at peace in the solitude of the forest. To stand in the forest listening to your own heartbeat, your own breath, the distant wind in the trees and the silvery silence of winter itself; that's got to be happiness. Mystical Moments in Winter but a hard time for animals and birds but the landscape is like a fairy tale.
Photo of the wintry forest of 2010 near Lochem in the beautiful area De Gelderse Achterhoek. The woody surroundings offer many possibilities for those who enjoy a good walk. I love it when it is crisp, clear and cold. Feels invigorating and energizing. I love the cold air on my face - it's exhilarating. My favorite part of walking in the wintertime is finishing with a hot coffee or Irish coffee and enjoying getting warm again.

The cold winter days are over. It's springtime. So I took some time to look back at my beautiful skating photos of Waterland nearby Amsterdam. Natural ice in the Netherlands is a rare occurrence. In fact, some winters there's no natural ice at all. Maybe that explains why the Dutch love to skate outdoors. They hardly ever get the chance! But when a cold wave hits, and the interconnected maze of canals, rivers and lakes freeze over, it's a spontaneous celebration, a national holiday. My best skating photo's of Waterland and most faved in one collection. I hope you'll like them. Thanks for your comments and faves.

If you scamper off to visit San Lorenzo and Medici Chapels, spare some time to cruise the outdoor market around the church. Purveyors of leather goods, scarves, T-shirts, jewelry, and shoes. Prices are rather competitive between vendors and they will haggle with you on the larger items. This local vendor is specialized in only Italian sportswear with the Azzurri color. Light blue was the official color of the Savoia family, Italy's monarchs until 1946. For this reason azure is the color usually worn by Italians in sport events.
The Mercato di San Lorenzo probably has the best leather and clothes bargains in town. Most visitors to Florence make a stop here. The Market of san Lorenzo, situated in the center of the city next to Basilica di San Lorenzo.

'San Gimignano delle belle Torri' is in Tuscany, 56 km south of Florence. It served as an important relay point for pilgrims travelling to or from Rome on the Via Francigena. The patrician families who controlled the town built around 72 tower-houses (some as high as 50 m) as symbols of their wealth and power. Although only 14 have survived. Visible from the bends of the highway, San Gimignano announces itself from above with its famous towers. Truly a little gem, it is so precious that UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage Site. So strategic for controlling the valley and offering defense against its enemies, was already inhabited in ancient times. Walking through the Old City means plunging into the Middle Ages and getting a taste of what the city must have been like more than seven hundred years ago. San Gimignano was founded as a small village in the 3rd century BC by the Etruscans. Historical records begin in the 10th century. Within the walls, the well-preserved buildings include notable examples of both Romanesque and Gothic architecture.
it is worth spending the evening at San Gimignano, the night colors the city with a magical atmosphere. To visit the city of the towers by night is a show that brings unique sensations. You can walk through the alleys lit by ancient lampposts that give out a yellow light such as the lanterns of a bygone era, you will be enchanted in Piazza della Cisterna under the starry sky framed by the high towers.

Verona is a city straddling the Adige river in Veneto, northern Italy most famous as the setting for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The area was already inhabited in prehistoric times, but who the first people were to establish themselves there remains a mystery. In 89 BC, when it became a Roman Colony, the city began to stand out. The traces of the Romans' works remain very much in evidence to this day. It is one of the main tourist destinations in northern Italy, owing to its artistic heritage, several annual fairs, shows, and operas, such as the lyrical season in the Arena, the ancient amphitheatre built by the Romans. Balcony from Italian word: balcone. A Modern Juliet balcony which involve a metal barrier placed in front of a high window which can be opened. Juliet balconies are named after Shakespeare's Juliet, who, in traditional stagings of the play Romeo and Juliet, is courted by Romeo while she is on her balcony. The city has been awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO because of its urban structure and architecture. Verona remains one of Italy’s most underrated cities despite its picturesque center of cobblestone streets lined with medieval pink-hued buildings, well-preserved Roman sites and dozens of churches. A short hop from major hubs like Milan and Venice, the former Roman settlement never feels overrun by tourists. Verona is so culturally vibrant, you’ll find time for lavish meals in inventive new restaurants, tastings at wine bars tucked away behind unassuming facades and shopping in small boutiques off the main arteries.
Piazza delle Erbe is originally the site of the Roman Empire. This piazza buzzes with life. It's no wonder that this is one of the most historic and picturesque squares in Italy. The sqaure is faced by a white marble column, on which is St. Mark's Lion, symbol of the Republic of Venice. It appears also in both merchant and military naval flags of the Italian Republic. The Lion of Saint Mark is also the symbol of the award of the Venice Film Festival, the "Golden Lion", and of the insurance company Assicurazioni Generali.
