Helgoland is a German island in the North Sea. In the past, the island has been part of Denmark and the United Kingdom, but since 1890 it has been German property. It is considerably further away from the coast than the East Frisian Islands. Strangely enough, it is not part of the customs territory of the European Community. On Helgoland,
Halunder freesk is spoken, a North Frisian language. The main island, with the recognizable cliff of Trias fur sandstone, which is subdivided into Oberland and Unterland. The
small island of Düne is mainly covered with sand and popular with nudists. There is an airport on Düne and there are two bungalow parks. Helgoland is traffic-free: there are only a few cars, and cycling is prohibited. There is a small bus that makes a tour around the island. There are also some electric vehicles that serve as vans. Helgoland can be reached by high-speed catamaran, ferry or by small propeller plane. The island enjoys considerable fame among nature and especially bird lovers because it is an important breeding ground and stopping place for sea birds from the
North Sea region and for migratory birds. Throughout the year there is a
colony of seals present on the island of Düne. The Germans love this lonely North Sea rock of red sandstone rock with its fresh air and relatively warm weather, thanks to the Gulf Stream. Therefore the island, relatively far
around 55 km from the coast, enjoys mild winter temperatures.
The unique island Helgoland in the North Sea has great flora and fauna for nature lovers. The most preferred way of strolling around the island is by walking. There are well-defined hiking trails around the cliff and other areas. Most of the visitors can’t leave Helgoland without visiting the Düne. The beaches in this area are beautiful, and often, one can find seals basking on the sand. An encounters with seals was great. It is necessary to maintain calm and to respect their space. They are adorable and fun to watch. Don't go closer than 30 metres, they prefer the south beach on Düne. There are two groups of seals than can be found here: the grey seal and the harbor seal. Estimates of their life span reach from 26 up to 38 years. To get any closer to the seals you just go swimming. The seals come to watch you. They come as close as 4 meters, but they are so fast. It's great to swim together with the seals. But then they are gone again.
Helgoland is een Duits eiland in de Noordzee. In het verleden is het eiland onderdeel geweest van Denemarken en van het Verenigd Koninkrijk, maar sinds 1890 is het Duits grondbezit. Het ligt aanzienlijk verder uit de kust dan de Oost-Friese Waddeneilanden, waar het niet toe gerekend wordt. Vreemd genoeg maakt geen deel uit van het douanegebied van de Europese Gemeenschap. Op Helgoland wordt
Halunder freesk gesproken, een Noord-Friese taal. Het hoofdeiland, met de herkenbare klif van Trias bontzandsteen, dat is onderverdeeld in Oberland en Unterland. Het
kleine eiland Düne is voornamelijk met zand bedekt en populair bij nudisten. Op Düne ligt een vliegveld en er zijn twee bungalowparken. Helgoland is verkeersvrij: er zijn maar een paar auto's, en fietsen is er verboden. Er is een klein busje dat een rondrit over het eiland maakt. Er zijn ook enkele elektrische voertuigen die als bestelwagen dienstdoen. Helgoland is te bereiken per high-speed catamaran, veerboot of per kleine propeller vliegtuig. Het eiland geniet aanzienlijke faam bij natuur- en vooral vogelliefhebbers omdat het een belangrijke broed- en pleisterplaats is voor zeevogels uit het
Noordzeegebied en voor trekvogels. Het gehele jaar door is er een kolonie zeehonden aanwezig op het eilandje Düne. Een ontmoeting met
zeehonden was geweldig. Het is noodzakelijk om kalm te blijven en hun ruimte te respecteren. Ze zijn schattig en leuk om naar te kijken. Ga niet dichterbij dan 30 meter, ze geven de voorkeur aan het zuidstrand op Düne. Er zijn twee groepen zeehonden die hier te vinden zijn: de grijze zeehond en de zeehond. Schattingen van hun levensduur variëren van 26 tot 38 jaar. Om dichterbij de zeehonden te komen moet je gaan zwemmen. Ze komen gewoon naar je kijken, maar nooit dichterbij dan 4 meter. Ze zwemmen zo snel. Het is werkelijk fantastisch om samen te zwemmen. Maar dan zijn ze ook zo weer weg.
