Mandalay Hill is known for its abundance of pagodas and monasteries, and has been a major pilgrimage site for Burmese Buddhists for nearly two centuries. At the top of the hill is the Sutaungpyei
iterally wish-fulfilling Pagoda. A panoramic view of Mandalay from the top of Mandalay Hill alone makes it worthwhile to attempt a climb up its stairways. To get a sense of Mandalay’s pancake-flat sprawl, climb the 240 metres hill that breaks it. The barefooted walk up covered stairways on the hill's southern slope is a major part of the experience passing through and around a
colourful succession of prayer and shopping opportunities. The climb takes a good 30 minutes, but much longer if you allow for stops en route. The summit viewpoint is especially popular at sunset when
young monks converge on foreigners for language practice. From as young as seven years old, the boys of Myanmar train as novice monks. Growing up together in their ancient monasteries they form a brotherhood of close connections. Every
Buddhist Burmese boy between the age of 7 and 13 is expected to enter the monastery as a novice monk for a period of a few weeks to several months. He has a choice to return to life outside the monastery at any time, or he can stay on as a monk, if he so chooses. They eat, pray, become educated, play and live together.
In Myanmar and the first thing we noticed was the large number of monks of all ages everywhere. Many families from poorer or more rural backgrounds take up the chance to send their son to be a monk as it also means a free education. They eat, pray, become educated, play and live together, and for potentially decades they form a new family. A novice monk looks out over the Irrawaddy river and scenic countryside from the Mandalay Hill in the afternoon. Countless temples from the 16th century dot around this 240m high hill.
Mandalay is de op een na grootste stad van Myanmar en ligt aan de voet van de 240 m hoge
Mandalay Heuvel. In vroegere tijden was Mandalay echter niet de hoofdstad van deze streek. De legende vertelt dat de Boeddha zelf een voorspelling heeft gedaan dat onderaan de Mandalay Heuvel een machtige stad gesticht zou worden. Echter pas in 1858 besloot koning Mingdon om gehoor te geven aan deze legende en ontmantelde hij de toenmalige hoofdstad Amarapura en verhuisde alles naar Mandalay. Vandaag de dag is Mandalay weer opgebouwd tot een machtige stad die de verbinding vormt tussen alle handel tussen Noord- en Centraal-Myanmar. Ook is Mandalay een
religieus centrum, waar u duizenden pagoda’s, tempels en kloosters kunt bewonderen. De allerbelangrijkst is echter de Maha Muni Pagode, waar een kolossaal boeddhabeeld bedekt met een dikke laag bladgoud te bezichtigen is. Jonge meiden steken bosjes wierook stokjes aan en plaatsen deze op een rek, knielen voor Boeddha en
bidden. Daarnaast is een
beklimming van de Mandalay Hill, vlak voor zonsondergang een unieke ervaring. Via een trap van meer dan 1700 treden is deze beklimming een ware uitdaging, maar de beloning is groot. Vanaf dit hoge punt heeft u een uitmuntend uitzicht heeft over het landschap, waartussen de Irrawaddy rivier zich een weg kronkelt. Het boeddhisme in Myanmar is de belangrijkste religie in het land. Als je reist door Myanmar kom je uiteraard in contact met het boeddhisme. Overal zie je de
monniken, nonnen en pagodes. Ongeveer 89 % van de bevolking is er aanhanger van het Theravada-boeddhisme. Een jonge monnik is aan het genieten van het geweldig uitzicht.
