Maurice Farman flying his 1910 Biplane (Renault 50 hp air-cooled 8-cylinder V-engine). This was the last design of Maurice Farman which used some form of wing compartment (Voisin like) as can be seen here. Although the Maurice Farman designs were indentified by the factory as MF. followed by a number, I have not seen an identification for this one. Contemporary magazines (e.g. L'Aérophile) identify this machine as Maurice Farman Biplan 1910.

Captions on old French postcards are to be taken cautiously. Although given here as a Sommer design it looks exactly like a Henry Farman III design. There may be some differences in the engine or in the detail design but I cannot see them.
Pilot is Georges Legagneux.

Farman produced a special trainer version of the Farman F 40 which was identified was the F 46 E2 (E2 is the category allotted by the Aviation militaire - where E stood for École). The design was massively modified to suit training, probably for newbies. An extra set of four wheels was added (making a total of eight wheels) to prevent nosing over during landing. The design of the tail was also changed as an extra part was added making the rudder balanced. The same with the ailerons on the top wing, large balanced areas were fitted. After the war Farman adverised this machine as an aerial taxi. In the USA it was marketed as the Farman Tourabout babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=coo.31924064649175;view=1u...
Importer in the USA was W. Wallace Kellett of later Kellett autogyro fame.

Maurice Farman went his own way in aeronautics, but strangely enough he is less remembered in (popular) history than his brother Henry Farman. The MF designs were very succesfull and the types MF.7 and MF.11 were built in very large numbers in France and abroad.
This postcard shows the Maurice Farman Biplane 1910 in flight, although this might be a fake, photographers were then very handy to 'change' their pictures. This 1910 type retains some aspects from the Voisin biplanes, like the closed panels fitted between the wings.
The firm of Maurice Farman was in 1910 identified as the Société Maurice Farman, Kellner et Neubauer.

This picture of the Voisin-Farman Triplane [aka Henry Farman No.1bis] gives an idea of the effort needed for maintenance (rigging) and control of the top wing.
The clear lines of the standard contemporary Voisin pusher of 1908/1909 are visible, compartimental wings, elevator in front, box like tail construction and elevators on upper and lower wings.
