Das erste Herbstblatt

Das erste Herbstblatt leuchtet wie Blut,
Als ob verwundet im Strauch einer ruht.
Sein Blut von Blatt zu Blatt still tropft,
Sein Tod an alle Bäume klopft.

Die Sonne brennt so still und stumm,
Das rote Blatt geht drohend um,
Als müßte ein Mörder im Strauchwerk stehen
Und wild sein Blutdurst am Weg umgehen.

Und abends steigt der Rauch dann auf.
Als sei das Land ein Kehrichthauf`,
So lastet am Fluß ein schwüler Dunst
Wie der letzte Atem der Sommerbrunst.
