A westbound Southern Pacific intermodal train rounds Cantara Loop in April 1985. This train began its descent into the Sacramento River Canyon up at Mott siding. It will will now follow the Sacramento River all the way to Lake Shasta.

It appears a very late season snowstorm hit the area earlier in the week.

Union Pacific 6019 and 6865, a pair of AC4400CW's are the rear Distributed Power engines on the Hayden Shuttle as it loads at Peabody Energy's Twentymile Mine. The train is creeping away from me and is about two-thirds of the way loaded with coal.
A pair of Bulldozers are seen on the coal pile which are shoving it onto the belt that will forward it to the chute so that the train can have a continuous supply and keep moving at .35 MPH.
This section of track is a dead end stub at the very end of the Energy Lead that allows the entire 115 car train to pull ahead and past the loadout where workers can inspect the cars for open doors or carry-over (left over coal) in the cars before the train changes directions to load.
The Hayden Shuttle runs between X-Cel Energy's Hayden Power Plant to Twentymile mine and return.
The distance from the power plant to the mine is only 13 miles by road but because of the way that the tracks are set-up, this train will have to change ends no less than 5 times during its run!
