Tired SD's on the C&S, it lasted way longer than it should have and I'm grateful. There was never a time when an Oakway got a track warrent that you didn't go out of your way to see it.

A crisp late fall morning near the continental divide finds SP led coal loads meeting a North Yard - Grand Junction manifest at Tolland. Tolland's 5,650' siding was rarely useful by this date and in 2007 was extended close to 3,000' east to accommodate all trains. The old D&SL grade over Rollins Pass climbs the hillside in the upper right of the frame, probably laughing at these UP trains sliding under the mountains it climbed over.

Utah Railway's helper set sleeps outside of their Martin shops. Utah seemed to run all their coal during daylight so this was the common after hours scene. The helper set shoved 2 coal loads over Soldier Summit that day from both Wildcat Mine and Co-Op loadout on the CV spur.

A load of Routt County coal grinds its way up the 1.8% grade over Pallas Summit on the approach to a crew change at Phippsburg. The Denver and Salt Lake Railway chose to leave the Yampa River at Phippsburg and build west over the small summit separating the Yampa River from and Oak Creek. Oak Creek provided a longer and more gentile approach to the lower Yampa River Valley. The 4-6 train days of the early 2000's have turned into 4-6 train months on this stretch of railroad but it's not gone yet.

C&S was always good for the old junk. Denver - Laurel climbs out of Boulder with a healthy cut of stacks pulled from Rennicks Yard on the way out of Denver.
