Fall is a wonderful season and we're blessed here in Colorado to have brilliant stands of aspen trees. The combination of the colors, the cooler weather, and (usually) very clear days attract many (many!) visitors to the mountains during September and October.

This photo was a challenge because truthfully, I wasn't planning on using this as a photo. The autofocus hated trying to pick up the trees or the leaves but couldn't seem to do both. This was hand held too, so it's not exactly tack sharp. But the colors of the golden aspens with the brilliant blue sky is hard to pass up.

I took this photo back in 2013 during one of the government shutdowns and it was the best thing for landscape photography in Grand Teton. Because of the shutdown, most access points were closed which is nice for photographers who are willing to walk.

We had the whole place to ourselves, minus that curious moose who was getting a little too close for comfort. I have processed other photos that I took that morning and posted them on here (and here, and here) but I hadn't used one with that blue sky behind the cotton candy pink clouds above the Tetons. I think I didn't know how to edit it properly until more recently.

On mornings like this, it's nice to know I didn't completely screw it up. Well you might say otherwise if you looked through the vastly majority of the other unprocessed pics.

Magic hour at the Sand Dunes is good for the soul.

I was trying to find a spot where I took this photo back in 2008 because I wanted to see if I could replicate this composition as well as see how much the shifting winds had changed the dunes in 14 years. But the light was fading fast so I didn't get my chance to take that picture. Next time.

One of the more fascinating areas in all of Colorado is Great Sand Dunes National Park. It's no secret that I love the area, I grew up in the San Luis Valley, and my family owned a farm for many decades in nearby Hooper.

This past spring I rented a 200-500mm lens, which was the largest lens I'd ever used and went to the Dunes with my good friend Chase. I wanted to maximize the usage of the zoom with the layers of the dunes to create, well the image that I posted here. While the surrounding area of the Sand Dunes is spectacular, I also love the abstract or almost geometric lines that the dunes create more than doing traditional landscape views.

I think this image works well and want to find opportunities to visit the Dunes again to hike further and capture more of this wonderful area.

This is actually a panorama, one I shot a few years ago at Emerald Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Colorado.

I was also never really happy with how I had edited this photo in the past and I wanted to put forth a better effort to really highlight the crystal clear reflection and the beautiful mid-morning light.

I'm really happy with the colors in this image because I restrained myself from going overboard with the greens to really give this photo a treatment more fitting of it's name, Emerald Lake.
