Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) - male
The forecast said 'sunny intervals and light winds'. I had rain. So I resigned myself to seeing nothing, but I would check the pond water levels.
At Ramsdown I noticed the levels had doubled, but were still basically puddles. A brief break in the clouds brought forth a bevy of Common Darters before they all sodded off again at cloud cover.
It continued like this for the next two hours, and was an exercise in patience just in case a hawker appeared. Sure enough, towards the end, in came a Southern Hawker - a young 'un, full of vim & vigour and almost impossible to follow.
And he came too damn close to focus on several occasions, so for a challenge I switched to macro.
Thankfully I managed a shot.
