Kite Aerial Photography. Kite : Dan Leigh Delta R8 – Camera : Ricoh GX 200 with Wide Angle converter. Rig : AutoKAP travel rig designed by Brooks Leffler.

This KAP session was one of the 31 KAP & PAP sessions we had over a week stay on Easter Island…

For this AutoKAP session, the wind was coming from the ocean 15 to 20 knots, the orientation of the rig was fixed (no rotation) , hoping that with the interval mode every 5 seconds, we would catch the 15 Moaïs of Tongariki if we would let enough line out.

The technique we used was easy and fun : the rig was attached about 35 meters below the kite, we then let the line go without any resistance to achieve an "horizontal" flight were the weight of the camera balances the speed of wind and ascension of the kite (quite tricky as the line and camera had to go between two moaïs..) once we "felt" the field of view had the 15 Moaïs, we stopped the line and started to reel in (once the line was stopped, both kite and camera gained altitude).

We then tried 5 other time and it was time to stop as we ran out of batteries !

This short video represents 42 images taken every 5 seconds and compiled in a 6 frames/second time lapse.
