Herring Gull

Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus) are one of the most familiar and widespread gulls in North America. Herring Gull numbers were greatly reduced in the 19th century, but are now numerous, and expanding in range and numbers. They are often found foraging around garbage dumps, fishing operations, and other human activities.

Ring-billed Gull

The Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis) is probably the most common gull found in the state. Adapted well to living with humans, it can often be found sitting in parking lots or scavenging at landfills. The yellow legs and overall size help to distinguish the species from other similarly plumaged gulls found in the state, as does the characteristic black ring around the bill seen in mature birds.
