Since this 1910 barn was built into the embankment, the farmer could once drive around behind it to access the upper floor for loading and storage. It also helped to protect the barn from severe wind and weather.

A collection of outdoor objects was left by the wealthy Hewitt family when they donated the mansion and land they had used as a summer home to the state of New Jersey in 1938. They had salvaged some of the artifacts from old New York City to decorate their garden, including iron objects associated with the history of the local ironworks.

You can see from the footprints that people enjoy walking through this iron gate as if it was the entrance to somewhere, though it has no pathway or attached fence, and likely never did at this location. It leads only to an open lawn. There are several gates like this and it adds to the charm of the place, along with the many other interesting and unusual items.
