As Darrell and I walked back across the campus after a session with the WIU Hot Shots photography club in the University's photography studio, we spied a stand of dandelion stalks softly lit by the setting sun. Neither of us could resist pulling our cameras out and taking some shots. This image of one going to seed is probably only the second dandelion picture that I have posted to flicker in the last couple of years. To obtain the shot, I used the articulating LCD (instead of the viewfinder) while holding the camera down near the ground. It was processed in Lightroom 5 using a radial filter.
My attitude towards these prolific and tenacious weeds has radically changed since moving out into the countryside of western Illinois. I used to fruitlessly try to eradicate them from the lawn... but now, because of the sheer overwhelming number of them and the huge size of the lawns out here, I am content to keep them mowed down with the rest of the grass. :D

As a photographer, night photography and photographing sunsets have always been a passion of mine. Despite the many times that I have been on the California Maritime Academy's 500-foot Training Ship Golden Bear moored in Morrow Cove in Vallejo, California, I had not taken any sunset or night shots from it. So, as I was walking along the shoreline to take sunset pictures of the California Maritime Academy's campus and the Carquinez Strait, I decided to board the ship and take photographs from one of the upper decks near its stern. Looking off the stern, that afforded a great view of the San Pablo Bay and Mount Tam on the distant shore.
As the darkness descended, I turned my attention to the bridges in front of the bow of the ship that spans the Carquinez Strait between Vallejo and Crockett, California. The water was very smooth on this particular night and multicolored lights were reflecting off the surface so beautifully... but just when I was ready to take a shot, a tugboat pushing a barge passed beneath the bridge and went past the Golden Bear, albiet closer to the opposite shoreline. When the water finally calmed down and I was ready for another shot, another tugboat came along pushing another barge in the dark. I didn't realize that there was so much traffic on the water after dark and remember thinking that I wouldn't want to be out there in a small, unlit vessel.
I could spend days and days photographing the inside of the ship--it is a good sized vessel (500 feet and it normally carries a crew of 300 souls). The Engine Room is a fascinating labyrinth of densely packed machinery, all supporting the massive twin diesel engines and the various systems required by this city that we call a ship. I hope to tackle the engine room with a camera one of these days. (IMG_0458a)

After a day out on the San Pablo Bay, a mariner steers his small vessel back towards the Mare Island Strait at dusk. This was a 0.4 second exposure at f/18 taken on December 4, 2011 while on the waterfront of the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California.

A six second exposure at f/16 capture of Morrow Cove, situated on the Carquinez Strait, viewed from the Faculty Drive on the university campus of the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California. The boathouse, dock and Training Ship Golden Bear, as well as smaller vessels, are in the foreground. In the background, the Carquinez Bridge and the shorelines of Crockett can be seen. As I was looking for a location to take some time exposures of the setting sun two nights ago, I drove past the Captain's home on Faculty Drive. He suggested a vantage point that was almost across from his house... so I set up the tripod and waited for the sun to set. I've shot this view during the day, but liked the idea of capturing the reflections off the water, the lights from the dock, ship and bridge at night from this same vista.
That evening, I actually remembered to turn off the image stabilization on the Canon lens. Later, when I downloaded the images, I was amazed at the difference that it made. Of the twenty or more images that I shot from this location, every single one of them was crisp and sharp whereas in the past perhaps as many of a third would have been blurred. There was a haze on the night that I shot this, which accounts for its silver tone or overcast look. Obviously, it was a great learning experience! Now, all I've still got to actually remember to turn it off when mounting the camera on a tripod! There were so many beautiful images I took that night that it was difficult for me to narrow it down to just these two. I hope you enjoy them--have a wonderful and safe holiday! (IMG_2349a)

A firey yellow tendril of reflected light seems to reach out across the orange skies above a mountain at sunset in northern California. In the retreating light, the aritficial lights of a vessel and terminal can be seen in the distance. (IMG_2220a)
