I had driven past the trailhead countless times, but never stopped. Finally, during last year's visit, I did, and hiked the shore at the edge of the forest, and it was good. Fabulous low cliffs on the opposite shore. Pristine water. Only a few other hikers, spread out. A quiet place, with many rocky perches to sit and contemplate or meditate or just rest a while.

I'm not positive this image works as well as I had hoped; it seems a tad busy with detail. Cropping it square was an attempt to control some of this. I do like the division of space, the individual elements, and the light - just not sure how well they work together. As with yesterday's shot of Medicine Lake, I framed this to exclude the sky, thinking the image was stronger without.

I often don't know if my image is going to work - I shoot a lot of bad ones, and in fact used to tell my students to shoot a lot of bad ones. If we don't push ourselves, if we don't really explore the relationships between objects within our frame, we run the risk of creating a bunch of competent but boring pictures that don't break any new ground or allow for growth. We have to be willing to risk failure. Great shots seldom come from playing it safe.

Don't be afraid of pixels. They're harmless.

I've been taking photos of wildlife for almost 20 years here in Alaska. I've climbed up mountains for photos of Dall's Sheep, met a coyote on a trail, had many close encounters with lynx, had two wolves walk within feet of me while hiking, had a grizzly bear follow me for over two miles, been accepted by both Arctic and Red fox as I photographed their young, had very close moose encounters, walked the tundra with musk ox and had so many caribou surround me that I couldn't see the end of the herd.
The past two years, for health reasons, most of my photography has been taken either from the roadside or from a 4 wheeler. My wife and I are both determined to hike Alaska like we used to.
I broke my left arm a month ago, Trying to hold a camera steady with one hand is nearly impossible. Even setting up a tripod one handed is a chore. I was feeling sorry for myself because the fall colors were peaking and the wildlife was moving. My wife wanted to drive down to Denali, so off we went. She said she would help me hold the camera if we seen any animals. My wife has cancer and is a lot weaker than she used to be, but that does not stop her from doing what she loves, being in nature.
The only animal we saw, was this beautiful griz feeding. We didn't even get out of our truck. I rolled my window half way down and used it as a base for my lens. Not the best shot, but I won't complain. Until both arms are good again, I'll just do what I can.
