She no longer shows her glory but she once hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, along with Manitoba’s Premier of the day, Ed Schreyer.
The Lord Selkirk II first sailed the Red River on June 7, 1969, carrying 130 passengers and 40 crew. Over a 17 year period many dignitaries and countless numbers of people enjoyed cruising the Red River and destinations throughout Lake Winnipeg. Over the years though business declined and the Lord Selkirk’s final voyage took place in 1990.
For the past 25 years the ship has remained at the end of a small channel of water off the Red River at Selkirk MB. The years of abandonment and a fire have destined the ship to salvage. Soon SaskSteel, a salvage company from Saskatchewan, will dismantle and remove the ship from its current resting place.
