Die Südlichen Breitmaulnashörner leben in den trockenen Steppen und Buschsavannen im südlichen Teil Afrikas. Die Hauptverbreitungsgebiete erstrecken sich über Botswana, Kenia, Mosambique, Namibia, Südafrica, Swaziland, Sambia und Simbabwe. Die meisten von ihnen leben in den großen Nationalparks. In ihren Verbreitungsgebieten sind sie auf Wassernähe angewiesen. In Zeiten großer Dürre unternehmen sie weite Wanderungen.
Das Südliche Breitmaulnashorn ist in Gefahr, da von dieser Unterart nur noch einige Tausend Tiere existieren, aber es ist nur noch eine Frage der Zeit, bis auch die Restpopulationen am Rand der Ausrottung steht. Neben der Zerstörung ihrer natürlichen Lebensräume durch fortschreitende Urbanisierung steht vor allem die Wilderei im Vordergrund

Es ist eine traurige Geschichte... Der letzte nördliche Breitmaulnashorn-Bulle, der noch hätte für Nachwuchs sorgen können, ist gestorben. Suni wurde tot in einem kenianischen Reservat aufgefunden. Sein Tod bedeutet nun das Ende für seine Art. Weltweit existieren nun nur noch vier nördliche Breitmaulnashörner.
Ein älteres Weibchen ist in einem Zoo in San Diego untergebracht. Ein ebenfalls betagter Bulle lebt mit zwei Nashorn-Kühen in einem Reservat in Kenia.
