The small town of Tejeda lies under Roque Nublo on the eastern edge of the volcanic crater that defines this part of Gran Canaria

Although a peaceful and sleepy town today, the dramatic landcapes around provide clues to a far more violent time. Like the Canary Islands as a whole, this area was formed by volcanic action millions of years ago. The crater that Tejeda now sits in apparently was formed in under two hours when large magma chambers just under the surface exploded violently.

The sun sets in a blaze of light into Tenerife's 3,700m high volcano 110km away.

When hiking on Gran Canaria you know you're getting somewhere when you can see the massive bulk of Mount Teide visible on the horizon. The massive volcano (the 10th highest in the world despite half of it being underwater) towers above everything else in the Canary Islands and is visible from miles around.

This was shot while we were on a hike through the pine forests of mountains of Gran Canaria high over the little town of Tejeda where we were staying.

Mount Teide punctures through the cloud layer 100km across the Atlantic from where we enjoyed the sunset.

It's not hard to believe that Mount Teide (or Pico del Teide) is the highest point above sea level of all islands in the Atlantic Ocean. No matter where we were on Gran Canaria if we climbed high enough, we could always expect to see its bulk looming as a slightly darker shape on the horizon. We were lucky to visit at a time of year where the sun set right behind it which rendered the murky mass on the horizon in sharp profile.
