The small town of Tejeda lies under Roque Nublo on the eastern edge of the volcanic crater that defines this part of Gran Canaria

Although a peaceful and sleepy town today, the dramatic landcapes around provide clues to a far more violent time. Like the Canary Islands as a whole, this area was formed by volcanic action millions of years ago. The crater that Tejeda now sits in apparently was formed in under two hours when large magma chambers just under the surface exploded violently.

The sun sets in a blaze of light into Tenerife's 3,700m high volcano 110km away.

When hiking on Gran Canaria you know you're getting somewhere when you can see the massive bulk of Mount Teide visible on the horizon. The massive volcano (the 10th highest in the world despite half of it being underwater) towers above everything else in the Canary Islands and is visible from miles around.

This was shot while we were on a hike through the pine forests of mountains of Gran Canaria high over the little town of Tejeda where we were staying.

Three hikers (can you find them?) walk the Ruta del Cares in Northern Spain.

Ruta del Cares (or the Cares Trail) is an 11km path that runs in between the Cantabrian Mountains along the "Divine Gorge" carved out of the grey limestone by the Cares river. It is considered one of the most beautiful natural sites in Spain with caves, bridges and pathways sculpted in the rock and it lived up to its promise despite the lousy weather we had when completing the hike. Now a tourist attraction, this section of the river's path used to be the only footpath between the towns of Puente Poncebos and Posada de Valdeón during winter.

A fortuitous gust of wind arranged thick clouds to frame the Picos de Europa mountains in Northern Spain.

We spent most of the trip to this spot wondering what the big deal was and cursing the clouds that had dogged us all day. Jim, the more energetic of our group decided to head off to the next hill to see what was there while the rest of us sat down for a Snickers bar.

A few minutes later, a small gap in the clouds exposed a patch of distant mountain and a with a few more gusts the gap begain to expand. Hoping that the opening would expose more, I picked up my camera and moved into position. The gap expanded more than I had initially hoped for, and then the foreground clouds cleared for a few seconds revealing Jim taking a photo in the foreground.

Despite waiting in the cold for another two hours, that was the only decent view we got of the mountain as the cloud base rose higher until we couldn't see more than 5 metres ahead of us.

The basilica in Zaragosa is best viewed from the banks of the Rio Ebro at low tide.

After wandering around Zaragoza for the majority of the day sight-seeing (and eating some awesome gelato and snacks), we decided that this vantage point underneath the los Primeos bridge offered the best view of the Catedral-Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar. Although we didn't plan it, our return to the spot seemed to coincide with low tide which allowed us to get to a level low enough to shoot the basilica with its reflection.
