The sun sets in a blaze of light into Tenerife's 3,700m high volcano 110km away.
When hiking on Gran Canaria you know you're getting somewhere when you can see the massive bulk of Mount Teide visible on the horizon. The massive volcano (the 10th highest in the world despite half of it being underwater) towers above everything else in the Canary Islands and is visible from miles around.
This was shot while we were on a hike through the pine forests of mountains of Gran Canaria high over the little town of Tejeda where we were staying.

It was getting dark while we shot the sunset on the Paúl Da Serra plateau and it was suggested that we wait a while until it got dark so that we could enjoy the stars in what should be a very dark part of the island. Unfortunately, the moon was far too full for us to see that many stars. At least the moon was an interesting object to take photos of...
This is not the most interesting photo in my stream, but after watching 'Wolfman' I've wanted to create something with a similar creepy and ominous mood that permeates that film. This is my attempt.

Solitary structures are bathed in warm evening light as huge clouds roil behind them in silence.
After several visits to the top of Pico Arieiro, we were finally rewarded with no fog and clear skies. Although the view into the sunset was spectacular, these houses caught my interest.
The yellow grasses which are common at these altitudes had caught the golden pre-sunset light and provided an interesting juxtaposition with the colourless clouds behind them. The subtle shapes in the clouds were contrasted with the sharp lines of the buildings and the hill's outline.
Both these contrasts come together to result in a painterly effect which I hoped to capture in this photo.

Despite the long drive home, we decided to stay out on the Paúl Da Serra plateau until the sun set. It was lovely watch the Sun slowly make its way to the cloud layer that surrounded the plateau. The colours in the sky above and the clouds below changed as the Sun lowered as we drove around trying to find the best spot to watch the final moments of the day.
As it turned out, we were in a small thicket a few minutes before the Sun slipped below the blanket of cloud and we didn't have a view of the horizon. Furthermore, the driver had left the car to walk into the thicket and had taken the car keys with him. Thinking fast, I sprinted the 80m or so to the treeline and managed to take this photo with shaky hands and in between heavy breaths. I was just in time to capture the last gasp of the day as the Sun plunged into waves of cloud.
The others soon caught up with the car, and with the car as a sturdy support, I took a few more photos such as this one.

On the westernmost tip of Madeira, a beautiful sunset is presided upon solely by a lonely lighthouse.
We'd planned on watching the sunset at Ponta do Pargo at the western extreme tip of Madeira all day, but didn't quite anticipate how long it would take us to get there along the windy mountain roads of the Portuguese island. The drive seemed like a pointless pursuit as we drove through overcast skies with no clear sight of the western horizon.
The delay served as a blessing, however, as we arrived just in time for the brief moments of relatively clear sky before a storm rolled in from the South bringing with it heavy rain, hail and winds. Seeing the sunset paint the deep storm clouds in vibrant colours was a great way to conclude a memorable day.
