There wasn't much of a light at the end of this tunnel in the Prague underground. Luckily things were far prettier up on the surface.

The Prague metro is the most used underground rail network in the world on a per capita basis. It wasn't being used all that much when this picture was taken though.

The view North from the Most Legií bridge in central Prague.

This bridge was built between 1898 and 1901 to replace an earlier chain bridge that crossed the Vltava River at this point. It was ceremoniously opened in the summer of 1904 and was named after the first emperor of Austria, Franz I.

Within the next century, the bridge's name has changed no fewer than four times. After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire it was named after the Czechoslovak legions that fought their way back from Siberia at the close of the First World War. During Nazi occupation, it was renamed after the composer Smetana. Later on, during the communist period it was named to honour international workers' day as the "First of May Bridge". Since the fall of the USSR, it has (once again) been known as the Bridge of the Legions (Most Legií).

The bridge visible in the photo is the more famous Charles Bridge.
