On a dirt track leading above the much-visited Seljalandsfoss reveals a view of where the chilly waters from the famed fall go -- through a narrow river delta out to the Atlantic, with the islands of Heimaey acting as watchers to their exit.

One of the best parts of visiting Iceland is taking random dirt tracks and seeing where they lead you. In our fist visit to the island in 2009, this approach (by necessity rather than design due to a road closure) took us to the magical Nupsa Valley which ended up being one of the highlights of the trip. In 2017, we bypassed the hordes at Seljalandsfoss (aka the Justin Bieber fall) and took a dirt track that lead up the hill from which the waterfall tumbled.

This led us to lovely views to the South past the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago and on to the Atlantic and to the West back over the road that carved its way through the coastal flatlands leading back to Reykjavik. More impressive than these views were the numerous other beautiful waterfalls that lay further upstream along the track. These falls had no visitors at all and although not quite as dramatic as Seljalandsfoss, would have been major highlights in almost any other country. More photos of these falls to come when I get more time to spend in Lightroom...
