Today I went exploring with my friends Kelly & Katie in some abandoned places in the area.
Going into abandoned homes is a very strange experience for me, I always feel so intrusive, and also so sad. I had a moment in the house from 'The Piano' where I was standing in the upstairs kitchen and there was a photo of a sixth grade class on the table (a girl had her tongue sticking out, it was so silly, barely anyone was looking at the camera) and dishes in the dish drainer next to the sink that had been freshly washed so long ago and I was just struck with so much lonesomeness. I can't imagine the situation that would make a family leave their home so abruptly, with pictures and personal items still lingering in the drawers. I always like to leave places as I have found them. For me, being in an abandoned place feels as overwhelming as a big cathedral, museum, or library, with so many artifacts from the past and a big overwhelming silence that feels wrong to break with your footsteps as you crunch through broken glass.
So thankful that the homes we visited today were untouched by graffiti (and just a small amount of trash.) I wish all abandoned places could stay so preserved.
