I am going to post some photographs of Morocco. This is a country Portuguese people visit very frequently, because it is close and also because of historic reasons. Portugal started to occupy parts of coastal Morocco since 1415. There are still signs of Portuguese occupation. For this particular post, I chose a place known as the Cistern, part of a fortress, both built by the Portuguese, therefore called the Portuese City. It has several items of interest including ramparts, Christian churches, and a synagogue. But the gem of this jewel box is the atmospheric cistern, used by Orson Welles in his version of Othello.
More information...

I visited this country for the first time last week and I loved it. I hope you will enjoy these photographs as well.

This is the b&w version of the "Portuguese Cistern of El Jadida", the photograph I posted yesterday. I think this was the best photographic moment I had during this trip. It seems that I want to enjoy it as much as possible. :)

It is the largest mosque in Africa, and the 5th largest in the World. It has a minaret with 210 metres, the highest in the World. Completed in 1993, designed by Michel Penseau and built by Bouyges. A Mosque open to non-Muslims.

This was one of my best moments in Morocco. People told me not to expect great things from Casablanca, but what I found was far beyond my expectations. Loved this city!

When the fruit of the argan tree is ripe, goats climb up the trees to eat the nuts. The owners of the goats enhance the climbing for several reasons, including the money tourists pay to photograph the weird scene. This, however, is a cause for the decline in the health of the remaining Argania trees, a rare and protected species.

Essaouira was a Portuguese possession, Mogador. "In 1506, the king of Portugal, D. Manuel I, ordered a fortress to be built there, named Castelo Real de Mogador" (Wikipedia).

Loved this small city in the atlantic coast. Visiting the medina and the market (the souk) was much more pleasant, as they were not so crowded and the sellers did not press us to buy.
