Kalie (p. KAY-lee) is in training with Southwest Search Dogs to be a trailing dog. Trailing dogs are scent-specific, as opposed to area search dogs, who are trained to find any human in a given area. They are given an article containing the scent of the subject and they follow the scent path of the subject, which may be some distance from where they actually walked, and is usually contaminated by the scent of hundreds or thousands of other people, and by other animals, food, chemicals, etc., and the subject's scent can be weeks old Their abilities are mind-boggling to me, even after all these years of working with them. Of course, these days, it doesn't take that much to boggle my mind.

Trailing dogs work on a lead and are more appropriate for busy urban areas, where there are lots of people and traffic, than are area search dogs, who work off-lead. We do use area search dogs in the city, though, because there are often open areas, like canyons, parks, cemeteries, and school grounds, where there are no people or traffic. Area search dogs have also located subjects in their own residences, which were thought to have already been searched. A few of our dogs are certified in both trailing and area search, but most just do one of the specialties.

Pardon the repetition, but I came across this shot last night, while I was culling photos from the shoot and thought it would make a good head shot, because of the beautiful eye reflections (they look much better when viewed large). One of the advantages of raw files that are 21 mega pixels is that you can crop tightly and still have nice detail.

This was shot outdoors in the shade, so I used an off-camera flash (there is no built-in flash on my camera) at low power to provide catchlights and to bring out the colors, while still looking like it was shot without flash. I wish I would have made the catchlights bigger by bouncing the flash off a reflector or shooting through a diffuser, but other than that, I really like how this shot came out. You can even see some bokeh circles in the background, if you look closely.
