I had never seen this species before and walked right past it, but I heard it rapping on the tree and saw several people pointing at it, so I went back to shoot it. I was surprised that it let people get so close to it (less that 6 feet, according to the EXIF data from my camera), but I guess it was so intent on drilling a whole in the tree (even though it did minimal damage) that it didn't care about anything else.

He was trying to swallow a little piece of wood that he dug out of the center of the stump that he was standing on, but it looks like the stick is holding his bill open.

Finally managed to get good light on one of these, while he paused for a few seconds from chasing the intruder. He looks pretty pissed to me. I'm glad his anger wasn't directed at me.
