Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia).
This is an unusual spring in Joshua Tree National Park in that 90% of the Joshua trees are blooming. It's usually much less than that.

As I was shooting, I noticed the vapor trail being formed and scrambled to include it in as many shots as I could. Joshua Tree National Park is under a popular route for airliners, but unless you happen to be looking, you don't notice them because they are so high. If you hear them, you need to look quite a distance from where the sound comes, since they are traveling so fast.

This weekend at Joshua Tree National Park, the trees were showing all the stages of their reproductive cycle, from buds like this, to full blossoms. Joshua trees are part of one of the most specialized relationships in nature because they are only pollinated by a single species of moth and that moth only pollinates Joshua trees.

As I was walking into the sunset last evening, having run a trail with Jessie, these delicate little empty seed pods were lit up like thousands of tiny paper lanterns. By the time I put Jessie up and returned with my camera, though, the sun had already set and they didn't appear to have the same glow. Now that I think about it, that was actually a better time to be shooting, because the bright colors would probably have been blown out in full sun. I'm really pleased with the way they turned out.
