Best viewed Large. There you can see the sky, trees, and snow reflected in his eyes, plus little bits of snow on his nose.

Explore #198 - Dec. 8, 2007

Gunner is one of our newer dogs in our Search and Rescue group, Southwest Search Dogs. Besides his great looks, he's got a fantastic personality that suits Search and Rescue perfectly.

Our training today was up in the Cuyamaca Mountains and it snowed for the first time this season. It made a beautiful background for the photo session, but I had to shoot fast because my camera was getting wet.

I used my flash on this shot to give him the catchlights in his eyes, but I also like the reflections in Gunner's eyes in his other photo, where I didn't use flash. Besides, I'm not crazy about catchlights in their noses. (I wonder if the fact that the catchlight is in a different place in each eye means that his eyes move independently of each other.)

Southwest Search Dogs' newest member. If you view this Large and look real closely, you can see tiny white specks on his nose. That's snow! Right here in Southern California! The earlier side-view shot shows it better.

Gunner is a lot of fun to shoot, because he's so photogenic and so attentive to his owner, Amy. He is a mixed breed, with obvious German Shepherd Dog genes, but according to his DNA, also Doberman, which you can see, once you know that. It's amazing to me that they can tell which breeds are in a dog's DNA.

Oops! This is actually Bodie. As Emily Latella would say, "Never mind."

My first video on Flickr, from my first day of shooting video with my new camera.

Area search practice at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. I was the subject, kneeling behind a burned, fallen tree, using it as a tripod. I was also in the shade, so neither dogs nor handlers could see me. It was a great day for the dogs, if not the handlers. We had strong Santa Ana winds, which are not always hot, as most people think. It was 47° while we up there and the wind chill probably made it feel like below freezing. When we got back home, though, it was 76°.

Speaking of video, remember the photo that I posted recently of the New Guinea Singing Dog? Well, my friend GlobalDog had two of the puppies in her back yard, recently, and she made this video. You gotta check it out. They're so cute!
