Tutorial: Sharpening Just the Eyes.
When I shoot animals and people, I usually focus on the eyes and try to shoot from an angle that provides good catch-lights in them. But I find that some sharpening, applied only to the eyes, often helps to make them stand out even more. Here is the technique that I use in PhotoShop (with Windows keyboard shortcuts).
Add a new layer. (Ctrl-J)
Choose Filter -> Other -> High Pass. (I use a radius of 25 pixels.)
Set the Blend Mode to Overlay.
Set default foreground and background colors. (D)
Add a Layer Mask and fill with black. (Alt-backspace)
Switch background and foreground colors. (X)
Select soft-edged paintbrush. (B)
Paint over the eyes.
Set opacity of the layer to your taste. (I usually leave mine at 100%.)
