This was my reward for working in the front yard this morning -- our only rose had blossomed. I didn't even notice it until I was cleaning up. Two days ago this was just a bud and I didn't think it would amount to much, but I was wrong. Trouble was, there was bright sun covering parts of the bloom, but also patchy shade from our tangerine tree. What was I to do?

The fix was to use my Lastolite Mini TriFlip 8-in-1 Collapsible Reflector Kit. This is a great tool that provides diffusion, so you get soft, even light without making total shade. It opens like a car windshield screen, but it has a handle on it for one-hand operation and it is small and light enough that I can use it by myself and that I can carry it with me on my camera bag. I found that if you want to vary the light, you can rotate it to different angles with respect to the subject. It also works great to provide added diffusion for your off-camera flash. You'll want to hold the flash about a foot away from the diffuser and put the diffuser as close to the subject as you can, without being in the picture, to get the softest light.

The kit also has several covers that you can zip over the diffuser to make Silver, SoftSilver, Sunfire, Sunlite, Gold, White Reflective, and Black reflectors. These all fold up and fit inside the case, along with the diffuser (provided you're adept enough to twist it back into its collapsed shape).
