There are as many as 35,000 species of land dwelling slugs and snails in the world, and 94 species in BC alone.
Snails belong to a large group of marine and land-dwelling creatures called molluscs. The word mollusc comes from the Greek word “mollis” meaning soft, in reference to the soft-fleshed body.
On the snail’s head are two pairs of tentacles. The longer pair are the ocular tentacles, tipped with eyespots used to detect light, shadow and movement. The second pair, called sensory tentacles, are positioned near the ground and have chemoreceptors. Some snails have a “homing” ability, and can return to a desired location or sheltering spot.
Snails occupy a surprisingly diverse range of habitats, as long as the basic needs of moisture, shelter and food are met. Drying out is of particular concern to these soft, slimy creatures. Generally, snails don’t venture out during dry conditions, and many seek out moist microclimates, such as underneath a piece of wood or some leaves.

On a Lilly pad sits a Bullfrog soaking in the sun.
Bullfrogs are native to the eastern part of North America, from Canada as far south as Florida. In the early part of the twentieth century it was introduced to B.C. by people who wanted to farm them for their meaty legs. Unfortunately, they spread through much of the lower Mainland and in many areas on Vancouver Island. They are also found in the South Okanagan. It is distributed widely in the western United States, where several introductions also took place.
Bullfrogs are very large frogs, females being larger than the males can reach 20 centimeters in length not including the legs and 750 grams in weight.
Most of B.C.’s native frogs are a mere bite sized snack for Bullfrogs and it is believed they are responsible for the declining populations of our native Red-Legged Frog and the Pacific Chorus Frog populations.

After a little swim, a tiny Pacific Frog climbs up a leaf of a Bog Bean Plant. At the top, it finds a comfy place to sit cupped in a leaf, taking in the warm summer afternoon sun rays.
NOTE The whole size of this frog was about the size of its head, as viewed.
