“Hygrophorus conicus”
Commonly known as the Witch’s Hat, this vibrant orange to orange-red capped mushroom transforms from its vibrant color to a patchy black and than at old age even black all over.
Cap is 2-9 cm ( 3/4-3 1/2 in) across and conical or sometimes convex with a conical umbo.
Stem is 40-150×3-12mm ( 1 1/2-6×1/8-1/2 in).
Habitat, single to gregarious in coniferous woods. Found widely distributed in North America from July-October.
No cropping, added slight dark vignette around edges.
Taken in Oct of 2010 on south east Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada.

A cluster of Gymnopilus mushrooms stand out on the trunk of a Fir Tree in a forested area on south east Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.Caps 5-18 cm wide; stipes 3-20 cm long and1-3 cm thick. Gymnopilus junonius mushrooms are found in dense clusters on stumps and logs of both hardwoods and conifers. Gymnopilus mushrooms are orange to yellowish in shade and are widely distributed in North America. They are usually seen from late summer to early winter. They are not edible.

While out enjoying the woods, I noticed some tiny Blush shaded Mycena Mushrooms decorating the mossy trunks of the fir trees. The warm afternoon autumn sunlight was reflecting off this one just right.

It's been feeling alot like autumn already and so thought I'd post this pic as I start to get excited about capturing mushrooms and lichens that will start to emerge from the forest floors as the days shorten, cool down and produce just the right environment for new lifeforms!
