The Pine White Butterfly can usually be seen fluttering up high amoung the conifer trees. The day I took this photo, there were all kinds of them flying up high among the Fir trees.
The Pine White butterfly has a wing span of between 25.4 mm (1 3/4 in) and 50.8 mm ( 2 1/4 in). Its forewings are white on the upper sides with heavy black marking on its wing tips and black edges. The undersides of the back wings have black veins. Males and females are similar, but the female is a little duller in color and her hind wings are sometimes edged in red and tinged with yellow.
The White Pine Butterfly can be found from southern British Columbia and Alberta south to the mountains of southern California, northern Arizona, central New Mexico and the western most edges of South Dakota and Nebraska. It is absent from the northwest coastal forests.
They feed on the nectar of flowers ( as shown), including rabbitbrush and beebalm. The caterpillar eats the needles of various conifers including pines, Douglas-fir and true firs.

A Lorquin’s Admiral lands on a sunny leaf where it appears to be soaking in the warm sun rays.Lorquin Admirals often perch high in trees, spreading their wings to sun themselves. From these perches, the males are also territorial and often dash out after other butterflies, returning to their favorite perches between battles.
