Since our family portrait turned out so poorly after Rebecca's baptism, we decided to do it again, under more controlled conditions, before Rebecca outgrew her dress.

This is baby Rebecca in the NICU area, after she'd been hooked up to a respirator. She seemed okay with it.

During yesterday's visit with Rebecca, the biggest thing we saw was that her nasal breathing tubes had been removed. She can now breathe the same air we do! Also, each feeding, she's increasing her amount, and was at 28mL yesterday. (She's 5.5 days old in these images.)

This image:

When Mommy tickles her cheeks, Rebecca will smile. She also likes holding fingers. Marline's slender, lithe fingers appear gigantic next to Rebecca's.

Rebecca now has her very own web page.

Scott & White Hospital (Temple, Texas)

Marline's water broke Sunday evening at about 8:30 p.m. while we were watching "Toothfairy" on DVD. We grabbed a few things and I drove her to the hospital in Temple, Texas. We were checked in by 10 p.m.

Her contractions were regular and slowly increasing in strength. Suddenly, at 2 a.m., she called for a doctor, saying she was ready now and there was no stopping her. At 2:18 a.m. on Oct. 11, 2010, our first child was delivered after just 33 weeks of gestation and only 18 minutes of labor.

Rebecca Lisette Fry was 4 lbs. 9 oz. (2080 grams) and 18 inches (45.7 cm) long. She has 10 fingers and 10 toes, and all the other normal human appearances (Marline counted).

After Marline and I each got a chance to see her up close, Rebecca was rushed to NICU (neo-natal intensive care unit). The doctors asked me if I wanted to stay with Marline or go with the baby. Marline said, "He'll go with the baby. I'm fine." So I went with Rebecca and watched as they connected her to a breathing apparatus (her lungs aren't quite ready yet) and a multitude of monitoring equipment.

She seems strikingly healthy and large considering her early birth.

In this image, Marline is counting Rebecca's fingers.
