This monumental flood discharger, a circular sink of concrete with a diameter of about 20 meters that I expected to see and photograph sucking the waters to its interior, was the main reason to visit the “Monte da Rocha” reservoir. Back home, researching for this trip, I was impressed with some pictures of the surreal effect of long exposures of that gigantic drain and got determined to repeat the image without major concerns of originality. Unfortunately, I would not be able to collect this other trophy picture because of the naive oblivion off a crucial detail: there were at least fifteen days since the last raindrop fell in the Alentejo and, of course, the waters were quite below the level required to occur any surface discharge ...

O monumental descarregador de cheias, um sumidouro circular em betão com um diâmetro de cerca de vinte metros, que eu esperava ver e fotografar sugando as águas para o seu interior, foi a principal razão da visita à Albufeira do Monte da Rocha. Ficara impressionado com algumas fotos do surreal efeito de uma longa exposição naquele ralo gigantesco e estava determinado a repetir a imagem sem grandes preocupações de originalidade. Infelizmente não conseguiria mais essa fotografia troféu em virtude de, ingenuamente, ter esquecido um detalhe fundamental: há pelo menos quinze dias que não caía um pingo de chuva no Alentejo e, naturalmente, às águas estavam bastante abaixo do nível necessário para ocorrer qualquer descarga de superfície…
